The weather is still cold and the frost and snow are continuing to show us that the dormant season is still halting in our gardens but there are still some plants that keep the garden alive even in this time of the year. We still have to do few thing in the garden before the warmer days of spring.

For a beautiful summer display of lilies you can now plant them outside or in pots. You can still continue planting trees, shrubs and roses as they are still in their dormant period. It is better to choose now the bare-root type and to plant them immediately after you bought them.

As days are so short, you can spent your indoor evenings planning the coming season and placing orders for plants and seeds. When the days are bright you can still find some jobs to be done in your garden. If you have cleaned your garden in autumn now you could have a nice perspective and you can think of the major changes that you want to do in your garden design and to move structures if you want to change the look of your garden.

If the weather is mild you can still plant trees, shrubs, hedging or roses. Shrubs that have outgrown their allotted space or the ones that simply don't fit anymore in your future design can still be moved in this dormant period. The winter arrival bring day and night time temperatures drop, so few things are need to be done in order to prevent frost damage. Check that you have done all you can to protect tender plants and any crops in store. The shorter days mean less hours to work outside, but give you more time for planning the next year garden.

There are still some things that can be done in the garden. Finish cutting all dead perennials down to soil level and tidy flower borders to remove plant debris that could harbor slugs, snails and other pests. Add it to the compost heap. Fork over bare patches between plants to relieve soil compaction, working garden compost into the soil as you go.
