It is not easy to regard a tree as just a plant because more than any other plants, trees create a sense of permanence and maturity in a garden. Trees have their own character and they add height, structure and structural focal points. With their large and distinctive silhouettes they form an attractive contrast with the softer lines of the other plants from the garden.
There is a very large variety of trees, differing in shape and form as well as in the color and texture of foliage, flower and bark. You can grow trees in many ways: from an informal woodland of hazels and birches to the most contemporary look of an avenue of copper beeches or as a single specimen like magnolias that will create a spectacular focal point.
When deciding to add trees in your garden you must consider the size that they will achieve when mature as they will generally become the longest-lived garden plants that you will have in your garden. The shape and form of a tree are as important as its size.
Although trees are most often valued for their architectural qualities, they also provide interest through their flowers, foliage, berries and bark. When planning to plant a tree choose its site so that its attractive characteristics are shown off to advantage.
Even if your garden is one of the smallest there is still some space for a small tree. Of course you can have a small tree. Not all of the trees grow big. You can even have a tree in a container and place it on your terrace. The large variety of trees can suite every kind of garden.
