Chives (Allium schoenoprasum) are the smallest species of the Alliaceae family that also contains onions, leeks, and garlic. Chives are hardy, draught tolerant, bulb-forming herbaceous perennials, that grow in clumps from underground bulbs up to 30-50 cm tall. The bulbs are slender conical, 2-3 cm long and 1 cm broad, and grow in dense clusters from the roots. The leaves are round and hollow, similar to onions, growing up to 50 cm long, but smaller in diameter having only 2-3 mm, with a soft texture.
